The Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca would be the most suitable president if the liberal parties merged into one, the leader of the Social Liberal Party (PSL) Oleg Serebrian said. “The idea of being in the same party with Filat, Pavlicenco or Chirtoaca does not scare me,” the PSL leader told a news conference on Tuesday. According to the cited source, the 2007 elections revealed that the liberal forces have potential, but it is dispersed. Dorin Chirtoaca would be the most appropriate president of the Liberals, because he had the best election results and this shows that he is popular with the voters. Of course, there would be elected an executive president because Chirtoaca has other responsibilities as mayor. Serebrian says that a prominent party with political celebrities should not frighten. There will be responsible positions for everyone. If the Liberal forces participate in the 2009 elections separately, they will run the risk of not reaching the electoral threshold. Asked to comment on the aspirations of the MP Vladimir Filat, who left the Democratic Party and announced his intention to set up a new political party based on the values of a Liberal democracy, Oleg Serebrian said that there is no need to multiply the Liberal parties. It would be more appropriate to restart the discussions over the fortification of a single Liberal pole. “If Filat shows more openness towards the Liberal pole, the discussions on the unification of the Liberals could become a reality,” the PSL leader said. Serebrian also said that he is not against becoming Filat’s deputy, but denied that he would have carried out talks with Filat over a possible merger or over the possibility of taking over the post of PSL president. The openness of the party members to the idea of a merger, the foreign factor and the consolidation of the financial efforts are, according to Oleg Serebrian, the reasons that would determine an eventual joining of the Liberal forces as they promote practically the same message.
