The Liberal Social Party (PSL) accuses the ruling parliamentary majority that, two years after adopting the Partnership Statement in the name of democracy, a state governed by the rule of law and European integration of Moldova, it has transgressed the bounds of democracy and supremacy of law, says a statement by the parliamentary group of PSL, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
According to the statement, on the one hand, the ruling party, along with its allies, adopts custom-made laws, admitting serious violations of the legislative procedure. On the other hand, all the bills proposed by the parliamentary opposition groups are completely disregarded. A relevant example is the inexplicable and groundless delay in examining and debating a simple motion submitted by a group of 17 opposition MPs in 2006.
A more recent example of antidemocratic deviation in Parliament, according to PSL, was the decision to stop live broadcasts of plenary sittings.
A cause for concern regarding the situation of democracy in Moldova is the suppression of the freedom of press and speech, as well as the blatant violation of a number of civic rights and freedoms. On March 27, 2007, the police arrested 15 representatives of an extra-parliamentary opposition party who were walking towards the Central Cemetery to lay flowers at the graves of the National Assembly members, on the occasion of the 89th anniversary of the unification of Romania with Basarabia. On the same occasion there were detained two reporting crews of PRO TV and DTV local channels that were filming the arrest, while the cameraman of the TV7 channel had his tape taken away and erased.
In the context, PSL parliamentary group requests the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, European Commission, European Parliament, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to treat prudently the Moldovan authorities and to continue monitoring Moldova with a view to not admitting the transgression of the bounds of democracy and law-based state. With sustained joint efforts, Moldova could return to normality and will be prevented from sliding into a dismal dictatorship, PSL statement also says.
