The European Social Democratic Party (PSDE) calls on all the pro-European parties of the Republic of Moldova to identify a common candidate for mayor general of the municipality of Chisinau. PSDE deputy chairman Vadim Brînzaniuc said that his party hasn’t yet officially presented its candidate as it expects the other pro-European parties to show maturity and identify a common candidate. For his part, the candidate for mayor general of the Coalition for Unity and Wellbeing (CUB) Ion Bulgac said the rhetoric according to which all the parties should unite around one candidate is false, IPN reports.

The deputy chairman of the PSDE noted there is a risk that Ion Ceban will gain a new term of office as mayor of Chisinau in the absence of a powerful pro-European candidate. All the pro-Russian forces in Moldova will provide candidates with reduced chances so as to ensure Ion Ceban’s victory in elections.

“We the first made a call in April, urging to identify a common candidate of the pro-European, pro-Romanian parties. We had many discussions and in the end some of the candidates announced their intention to run separately. We could ultimately adopt a serious approach. We should try and take a step backward, including those who already announced their intention to run election and should have a common candidate. All the pro-Russian parties gathered together around Ion Ceban. The Socialists will field an unknown candidate. This makes us believe that Moscow aims to strengthen the candidate it has in Chisinau,” Vadim Brînzaniuc stated in a program on Rlive TV channel.

In the same connection, the CUB’s candidate for mayor of Chisinau Ion Bulgac said that it is the government that increases Ion Ceban’s chances of winning a new term in office, not the parties that put forward candidates. By fighting against Ion Ceban, the government does nothing but increase the current mayor’s visibility.

“I’m a citizen of the Republic of Moldova. I know my rights and obligations towards this state. At constitutional level, the state recognizes my right to vote and to stand as a candidate at elections. We should not allow to be manipulated by electoral technologies according to which the insignificant parties should unite, while the large parties should struggle between them. As to Ion Ceban, I’m sure that the current government now does a much bigger service to him than we do by this public struggle. If you think I’m to blame for the fact that Ion Ceban is considered the candidate with the biggest chances, I’m inclined not to agree with this,” said the deputy chairman of the CUB Ion Bulgac.

The first round of the local general elections will take place on November 5 this year.
