Representatives of the Civic Platform “Actiunea-2012” (“Action – 2012”) protested in front of the Chisinau City Hall against the concert that the Embassy of Russia intends to organize in the Great National Assembly Square in the central square on May 9. The protesters said that May 9 is a mourning day for Bessarabians and the local authorities shouldn’t have issued an authorization allowing staging the concert, IPN reports.
The participants in the protest asked for explanations from Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca. They accused the municipality of betrayal and said the May 9 events can be held in other places rather than the Great National Assembly Square. They announced that they will continue the protests and will go to the airport when singers Iosif Kobzon and Lev Leshchenko will arrive to take part in the May 9 concert in Chisinau.
Dorin Chirtoaca said that by May 9 he will sign an order according to which only events dedicated to Europe Day will be held in the Great National Assembly Square on May 9 from next year. The events dedicated to the victory against fascism will be mounted at the memorial complex “Eternity”. The mayor added that the municipality cannot ban holding an event in the center of Chisinau as this is against the Law on Assemblies. Under the legislation, the local authorities are obliged to allow organizing events if the area asked for is not occupied.
The Victory Fay is marked in Moldova on May 9. On this occasion, the Russian Embassy in Chisinau will stage a concert that will involve Iosif Kobzon and Lev Leshchenko. The event is financed by the Foundation “Miron Shor” and Unibank.
