Employees of the wagon depot No. 4 in Basarabeasca, of the state-run company Moldova’s Railways, on June 26 mounted a protest, demanding that they are paid their salaries for April and May. The local channel Bas TV said to avoid problems, the employees returned to work, but it’s not yet known if the employers will fulfill their duties and will pay them. Contacted by IPN, director of Moldova’s Railways Vladimir Cebotari said that he does not know about the protest in Basarabeasca, but the money for remuneration is to be transferred on Monday, according to schedule, so that the workers will be able to pick up their salaries next week.

“We daily pay salaries because we have over 40 units under administration and money for pays is daily allocated to one or two units,” said Vladimir Cebotari. He noted that the company always had a remuneration payment schedule, but the term for paying salaries was extended owing to the shortage of funds. The situation is typical of summer, but it will be remedied when the volume of freight increases in autumn.

Earlier, Vladimir Cebotari said the salaries are overdue because of the situation in Ukraine where there were the main addressees and forwarders of goods that crossed Moldova’s territory. But all the measures are being taken to solve the remuneration problem.

At the start of June, employees of another depot of Moldova’s Railways blocked a railway line for several minutes, the Chisinau-Moscow train being thus delayed. The employees expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that they are paid salaries with delay.
