Amnesty International Moldova picketed today the Embassy of China in Chisinau. This way, the members of the human rights organization marked 20 years of the bloody suppression of student demonstrations in Tiananmen Square in Beijing and protested against the restriction of alternative opinions and persecution of human rights defenders and civilian activists in China, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Twenty years ago, on June 4, the students protested, demanding freedom of expression and democratic reforms. Today, we commemorate those victims and demand that the Chinese authorities independently investigate this case, hold accountable the persons to blame and release those that have been held in prisons for 20 years,” campaign coordinator Viorel Barbanoua said.
Evgheni Golosceapov, executive director of Amnesty International Moldova, said that this action is very topical for Moldova. “As we can see, our authorities do not hurry to fulfill their obligations concerning human rights. Moreover, they violate the right to free expression, free association and free thinking. Unfortunately, what happened 20 years ago in China is relevant to Moldova as well. The events that took place in Tiananmen Square and in Chisinau on April 7, 8 and 9 are very similar. In both of the cases, the people came out to publicly express their opinions and call on the authorities to observe the law. In a year, on April 7, the human rights NGOs and the ordinary people should gather in the Great National Assembly Square with candles to remember the victims of the oppression,” Golosceapov said.
The executive director of Amnesty International tried to send the letter of the AI’s Secretary General Irene Khan, which is addressed to the president of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China Wu Bangguo Weiyuanzhang, to representatives of the Chinese Embassy. The letter calls upon the Standing Committee to hold an open and independent inquiry into the Tiananmen events.
Golosceapov stated for Info-Prim Neo that no one will probably open the door as the previous years. When they try to transmit the letter to the embassy, no one opens or they are asked to put the letter in the mailbox, he said.
