MPs and sympathizers of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) today, July 29, protested at the Constitutional Court, demanding that the Republican Stadium should remain state property. It happened after the law of December 3, 2020 by which the law of 2018 that authorized the sale of the site of the former Republican Stadium to the United States for construction of a New Embassy Compound was revoked was declared unconstitutional, IPN reports.

The protesters demanded that the judges of the High Court should uphold the law adopted on the initiative of PSRM in the Parliament of the previous legislature, by which the site of the former Republican Stadium was transferred back under public ownership on which other facilities than sociocultural and sports ones cannot be erected.

In a statement issued earlier, PSRM said the decision on the privatization of the Republican Stadium was taken by fully violating the principle of transparency, without holding public consultations and without specifying the value of the contract.

The Socialists said the Constitutional Court’s verdict is the result of secret agreements between President Maia Sandu and U.S. Ambassador Dereck J. Hogan for obtaining support for the Party of Action and Solidarity in the snap parliamentary elections. By this decision, the current government violated the national sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova.

The PSRM announced it will continue to struggle for the Republican Stadium to remain property of the Republic of Moldova.

The Constitutional Court today pronounced following the examination of three challenges filed by MPs of the Democratic Party, the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” and the Party of Action and Solidarity, who disputed the law adopted by the parliamentary majority consisting of MPs of the Party of Socialists and the For Moldova Platform that included the MPs of the Shor Party.

Last week, the CC rejected as inadmissible the application of Socialist MPs Grigore Novac, Vasile Bolea and Alexandr Suhodolski to determine the constitutionality of Law No. 151 of October 4, 2018 concerning the sale of the site of the former Republican Stadium to the United State for construction of a New Embassy Compound.
