About 300 people from different settlements of Transnistria protested in Tiraspol against the austerity measures taken by the administration of Yevgheny Shevchuk. The protest was organized by the deputy of the so-called supreme soviet of the region Anatol Dirun, who heads the Movement
“People’s Unity”, Radio Free Europe reports, quoted by IPN.

Anatol Dirun called on the people to ask the authorities what they did and why they adopted particular decisions in medicine, education or agriculture. He said that the costs for cultivating a hectare of land, including for irrigation and electricity, now rose 2.5-3 times. “We are told that the agricultural sector will cope. I would like to see how these specialists cope in such conditions. When a minister says that the productivity per hectare is low, I would like this minister to get onto a tractor and to work as a mechanic,” he stated.

Attending the event, Vadim Doni, a member of the Tiraspol town council, said the new trolleybuses that started to run on the streets of Tiraspol on Bender several months ago are actually not a gift from Russia, but were purchased in leasing and the already poor population of Transnistria has now to cover these costs too.

The Transnistrian region is facing economic problems and price and tariff rises. The region’s administration announced that only 70% of the salaries and pensions for February will be paid. The other 30% will remain as a debt that will be settled when the situation improves.
