The Bashkan of Gagauzia Evgenia Guțul was arrested last night at the Chisinau International Airport, when she intended to leave the country. According to the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO), she appears in the information systems on the no-fly list. That is why the border guards informed the competent authorities about the incident, IPN reports.
"On the evening of March 25, the Bashkan of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia showed up at the exit way of the Chisinau International Airport. Following routine checks carried out within the border control, it was found that she appears in the information systems on the no-fly list," noted the PGO.
According to the legal procedures, the competent authorities were immediately informed. Subsequently, the Bashkan was arrested for 72 hours by officers of the National Anticorruption Center, under the coordination of the Chisinau Prosecutor's Office.
After the arrest, fugitive convict Ilan Shor stated that it was a crime. "Crimes and criminal actions that Moldova cannot get used to. Although Sandu hints that this is a normality. We demand an end to these shameful and cynical persecutions!", Shor wrote on social media.
Immediately after the arrest, supporters of the Bashkan were mobilized in front of the National Anticorruption Center, despite the fact that it was late and raining.
The Bashkan’s adviser Mihail Vlah called on the Gagauz people to join a rally in support of Evgenia Guțul on Wednesday. The demonstration is set to take place in front of the Executive Committee in Comrat, starting at 09:00 a.m.
On Tuesday, prosecutors announced that they completed the presentation of evidence in the case in which Bashkan Evgenia Guțul and the secretary of the Central Office of the former Shor Political Party were charged. They are accused of complicity in the illegal financing of the political party and an election competitor by an organized criminal group.
Last week, two pro-Russian MPs affiliated with Ilan Shor went missing. These are Alexandr Nesterovski, who was recently sentenced to 12 years in prison, and Irina Lozovan, who was to find out her sentence on March 31 and was forbidden to leave the country. In the case of the latter, the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office specified that she could not have left the Republic of Moldova through the state border crossing points. The MP was banned from leaving the country and the court’s order was submitted to the Border Police for execution.
