Prosecutors have dropped the treason charges pressed in 2017 against former MP Iurie Bolboceanu and requested his acquittal. The Special Cases Prosecutor's Office (PCCOCS) announced that it filed renunciation documents to the Buiucani headquartered Chișinău Court and that magistrates are to issue a ruling on October 16.

According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the criminal case is part of the 38 case list that are presumed political in nature and are being re-evaluated by a group of prosecutors. The list and the re-evaluation order were issued as a result of the Declarations and Report of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which indicated a list of cases suspected of illegal, abusive, selective and political pursuit of persons from Moldova.

Iurie Bolboceanu was subjected to special investigative measures and was detained on March 17, 2017, by PCCOCS. In March 2018, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison for treason. Iurie Bolboceanu was accused of gathering and sending information of national interest, which could be used against the interests of Moldova, to officers of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, between October 5, 2016 and March 17, 2017.

He was detained for two years and three months, until the Chișinău Court of Appeal ordered a re-examination of the case. During examination of evidence in court, PCCOCS concluded that the Iurie Bolboceanu’s actions did not amount to a crime and dropped the charges.
