The prosecution does not agree with the punishment given to ex-Premier Vlad Filat and intends to appeal it to the Appeals Court. The politician on June 27 got nine years in jail for influence peddling and passive corruption. He was also fined 60,000 lei, banned from holding public posts for a five-year period and will have a part of his property confiscated, IPN reports.
Prosecutor Adriana Betisor said that besides obtaining very large sums of money, Vlad Filat benefitted from hotel and airline services and from particular goods in exchange for favors when he was Prime Minister. “I note that none of the proofs in this case was challenged and no counterargument was provided. The sentence will be indisputably appealed. We do not agree with the punishment. I think the Appeals Court will take into account all our arguments and will modify it,” she stated.
Vlad Filat was arrested eight months ago following a self-denouncing statement made by the mayor of Orhei Ilan Shor, who said that he offered US$250 million bribe to the ex-Premier for particular services. The prosecution demanded that Vlad Filat be sentenced to 19 years behind bars.
