President Maia Sandu and Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo are urged to come up with a proposal for holding accountable the prosecutors and investigators who fabricate cases. The call was made by the public association “Right to Justice” and by activists who took part in the protest against the Filip Government in January 2016.

In a news conference at IPN, Aureliu Pisica, a defendant in the case started after those protests, said that during these years, he attended hearings and saw that the prosecutor committed violations and had no fear of being held responsible.  “The call is clear – to hold accountable the prosecutors and investigators who fabricate political cases and start cases by order,” insisted Aureliu Pisica.

Pavel Grigorciuc, who heads the public association “Right to Justice”, said the case started after the protest of January 2016, which involved thousands of people, is fully political in character, “being fabricated by the justice system of Plahotniuc”. There could be delays in this case, as it happened in many other cases. Of the four defendants who were brought to justice, one had the charges against him dropped and the situation is thus unclear.

The activist called on President Sandu, as the guarantor of the protection of human rights, to take this and other fabricated cases under control. According to him, some of the prosecutors present the right to expression as an illegality, trying this way to scare the people so that they do not protest. Instead of presenting this activism as an example, these people continue to be tried.

The association’s leader called on the foreign partners that offer assistance in reforming the justice sector, ensuring democracy and the respect for the human rights to pay attention to cases featuring people whose right to freedom of expression is violated.

The court of law on January 13 is to pass its sentence in the case that features four of the participants in the January 2016 protest mounted against the investiture of the Filip Government. The hearing at the Buiucani branch of the Chisinau City Court was set to start at 11am.

The news conference forms part of the series of conferences held in the framework of IPN’s project “Exposing Injustice through Multimedia”. IPN Agency does not undertake to decide if the organizers of news conferences are right in the cases about which they will speak as this is the exclusive prerogative of justice, but the exaggeratedly long examination period of these cases, which is much longer than the law allows, can be considered an act of evident unfairness and injustice.
