Vasile Plevan, the prosecutor assigned to investigate alleged misconduct by the currently suspended Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo in the so-called Turkish teachers’ case, has notified the Superior Council of Prosecutors he is relieving himself of the task.

The Council has consequently asked the Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office to pick up the inquiry.

The inquiry was started in December 2021 based on a complaint by the former MP Ina Grigoriu. Plevan was assigned by the Council earlier this month, after prosecutor Andrei Balan decided last December that there was no case to pursue and Grigoriu challenged that decision.

In September 2018, seven teachers from a Moldovan-Turkish network of schools were illegally extradited by the Plahotniuc regime to be jailed in Turkey. Grigoriu has accused Stoianoglo of helping to cover up the case that he inherited from his predecessor and of doing little to prosecute those responsible. Only one person, the former director of the Security and Intelligence Service Vasile Botnari, stood trial and he eventually got away with a fine.
