The President will name the Prosecutor General, as it is provided in a bill to amend and supplement the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, adopted by Parliament on November 25, IPN reports.
Presenting the amendment before the MPs, Deputy Minister of Justice Nicolae Esanu said the new Law on the Prosecution Service, which was appraised by the Venice Commission, laid the basis of the prosecution service reform, which provides for the appointment of the Prosecutor General by the President, not by Parliament.
The prosecutor will be chosen by the Superior Council of Prosecutors based on the results of a public contest. The criteria are laid down by the given law. The candidate will be named by the President for a seven-year term that cannot be renewed.
“According to the Venice Commission, the fact that the Prosecutor General will be named for one term that will be longer than the Parliament’s mandate will ensure the independence of this,” stated Esanu.
The bill was passed in two readings, including the final one, by the votes of 84 MPs.
The winner of the presidential elections, Socialist Igor Dodon said he will do his best for the amendment to turn into the first step towards the liberation of the country from the captivity witnessed during the last few years.
