Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo called on the managers of the local, specialized prosecutor’s offices and the subdivisions of the Prosecutor General’s Office to apply remand detention only in exceptional cases, only if the use of other preventive measures can significantly hinder the proper investigation of the case, IPN reports.

The PGO said the measure was requested following approaches made by the National Administration of Penitentiaries, which expressed its concern about the rise in the number of cases of COVID-19 in prisons.

“Given the particular circumstances of the criminal cases, the correct use of these rules can help avoid crowdedness in penitentiary institutions,” the institution noted in a press release.

The Prosecutor General also asked to exclude the requests to escort detained persons for participation in procedural actions, except for cases when this is absolutely necessary, and to continue the practices to perform the activities at penitentiaries.
