Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin on October 15 asked Parliament to annul the parliamentary immunity of the Liberal-Democratic MP Vlad Filat, IPN reports.
“The Prosecutor General’s Office requests immediately initiating and performing the procedure for examining the given request, annulling the parliamentary immunity and allowing detaining, arresting and investigating the member of Moldova’s Parliament Vladimir Filat, with the subsequent sending of the case to court,” says the prosecutor general’s requisition, which was read in Parliament by Speaker Andrian Candu.
According to the requisition, while holding the post of Prime Minister, Vlad Filat asked and received money from Ilan Shor for stopping the inspections at Dufremol, for naming him honorific consul in Russia and for allowing him to sell oil products. Also, Vlad Filat asked from Ilan Shor property and financial resources of over US$190 million for influencing public functionaries from the Government and other state institutions to take decisions and to adopt normative documents needed to ensure the issuing of additional shares at Banca de Economii, without the participation of the state. This led to the diminution of the state-owned holding in this bank to 33.3% plus 1 share and the taking over of Banca de Economii by Ilan Shor. These decisions also ensured the naming of Ilan Shor as head of the Administration Board of Banca de Economii and this thus obtained real possibilities of influencing the activity and decisions of the bank.
“Given the gravity of the examined facts, there are reasonable suspicions to believe that Vladimir Filat, making use of his parliamentary immunity, will take measures to prevent the administration of evidence by influencing witnesses, to destroy or hide proofs relating to this case or will intentionally avoid presenting himself to the prosecution body,” reads the requisition.
According to it, there are also other reasons for taking the legal measures provided in the Code of Penal Procedure, specifically the statements of witnesses, who, being warned about criminal punishment for calumny, said that namely Vladimir Filat committed the aforementioned illegalities.
The MPs took a break of 30 minutes.
