The Supreme Council of Prosecutors decided to discharge prosecutor Sergiu Canter and demote Iurie Ghervas, the senior prosecutor of Chisinau's Buiucani district, where Canter worked. The decision was made on Tuesday, March 30, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Council held an internal inquiry after citizen Oleg Murzac complained that on April 8, 2009, a police officer, who allegedly formed part of the special police brigade “Fulger”, fired a shot at his car. The case was examined by the Prosecutor's Office of Buiucani district, but was closed before being sent to court. “Prosecutor Canter committed a flagrant violation as he did not fulfill his duties. The rights of a citizen were infringed. Such violations are inadmissible. It was a murder attempt, but no steps were taken to punish the person to blame,” said Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubko. According to him, Iurie Ghervas was demoted for the same reason – he did not appropriately fulfill his duties and the human rights were consequently violated. “Ghervas, who coordinated Canter's actions, did nothing to investigate this case and closed it,” Zubko said, adding that he also did not react to the steps taken by the Prosecutor General's Office over the April events. Iurie Ghervas and Sergiu Canter can appeal the Supreme Council of Prosecutors' decision to the Chisinau Court of Appeals within 10 days from the moment they see the decision, which is issued during 20 days of the day when it is pronounced.
