Vlad Filat’s lawyer Igor Popa said the prosecution’s request to sentence his client to 19 years in jail is defiance of common sense. According to him, the trial is full of errors and they hope the court will take into account the fact that there is no evidence proving the politician’s blame, IPN reports.

“The request by the prosecutor to give the defendant 19 years and confiscate his property is a shame for the whole country. It’s inhuman to ask for 19 years in a case where there is no evidence and where Vlad Filat has his rights violated and is humiliated,” stated Igor Popa.

The lawyer noted that the hearings are held with multiple violations of the procedures. “We draw the court’s attention to every mistake made by the prosecutor and hope that these mistakes will be taken into account. 90% of the evidence in this case was collected illegally, not mentioning the fact that the prosecutor made suppositions only. There are no proofs showing the blame. Vlad Filat committed no offense. There is a witness, Ilan Shor, who should be charged and there is the prosecutor who makes suppositions. These two persons do their best for Vlad Filat to be jailed,” he stated.

According to Igor Popa, Vlad Filat had to give up the hunger strike. “He didn’t have an alternative. The doctors practically forced him to do this by the perfusions administered to him. Today Vlad Filat was unable to understand what was going on in the hearing. We consider this is abuse and inhuman treatment,” he said.

Vlad Filat will be able to say his last words in a hearing on June 27. The ex-Prime Minster was deprived of parliamentary immunity and arrested on charges of influence peddling and passive corruption. He pleads not guilty.
