To cope with the political pressure, the prosecution service must be consistent in approaches and go hand in hand with the reformation of the institution, Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen said in an international conference held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the prosecution service of the Republic of Moldova.

As regards the reform in the field, Eduard Harunjen said there are yet shortcomings related to the implementation of internal regulations. “We are to switch over to the implementation of the most important aspect – changes of mentality and perception - and to be consistent in approaches,” stated the prosecutor general.

Attending the event, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said the reform is felt by high-ranking officials, customs officers, police officers and judges who are investigated and convicted in cases of corruption. “I’m convinced that the legal norms adopted during the past year and the efficient actions of anticorruption prosecutors played an important role in increasing the resistance and intolerance to corruption. The level of discomfort for corruption in the Republic of Moldova also increased,” stated the Speaker.

Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola noted that the prosecutors must fulfill their duties impartially and objectively and must respect and protect human rights, in accordance with the international treaties to which Moldova is a party. “Despite the legislative accomplishments that are visible in the justice sector, there are aspects that require evident improvement. Among these are the detention conditions and right to public hearings that should be respected,” stated the official. According to him, the best method of gaining the society’s confidence is to make the prosecution service as transparent as possible. He underlined that the EU is ready to support the Republic of Moldova in this process, especially to provide technical assistance.

In the ceremony, 46 prosecutors were awarded for special results in activity and remarkable performance during several decades of work in the prosecution service.
