The prosecution service didn’t do its job in the case of the billion stolen from the banking system and conducted only an investigation based on criteria of interests, lawyer Ion Dron, who heads the Center for Initiatives and Public Authorities Monitoring, stated in the program “Place for dialogue” on the public station Radio Moldova, IPN reports.

“They have spoken about the theft of the billion during a year, but I didn’t hear a criminal case to be started and didn’t see an order to this effect, signed by prosecutors. To ask for external assistance, we should first take legal action at home,” stated the jurist.

Ion Dron rejected the idea of ordering an investigation into the theft of the billion to U.S. and EU prosecutors. “The theft of the billion is our problem. If we manage to investigate this case from the beginning till the end, by holding all the involved subjects accountable, we can yet show that we have a say. If it is established that money was laundered from Moldovan banks to other countries as a result of the theft of the billion, the law enforcement agencies of these states have the right to start criminal cases,” said the lawyer.

Director of the Institute for Political Consultancy and Research “Politicon” Anatol Taranu also considers that the prosecutors do not take all the necessary measures to elucidate the theft of the billion. “Strange things are witnessed in the investigation of the billion. The first strange thing is that a criminal case wasn’t started. The prosecutors didn’t take all the necessary measures. There were Prime Ministers who signed guarantees for lending to Banca de Economii from the reserves of the National Bank. I think the prosecution service has a say here,” he stated.
