Promo-LEX Association expresses its concern about President Maia Sandu’s proposal to amend the legislation so as to facilitate the police’s intervention in assemblies. It describes the idea of amending the law on assembly as detrimental as this law is one of the best in the region, IPN reports.

According to the experts of Promo-Lex, the law on assembly in the Republic of Moldova ensures a favorable framework for exercising the freedom of assembly. The amendment of this law is not opportune and cannot be influenced by an alleged conflict between the local public administration and the police.

Moreover, the Association noted the police have all the legal instruments needed to intervene in situations that endanger public order, the people’s life and health. Also, the amendment of the law depending on conjuncture is a harmful precedent for a democracy based on the rule of law.

On Tuesday, President Maia Sandu requested the Government to consider temporarily amending the legislation so as to enable the police to maintain public order even when “particular players of the local administration sabotage the Government’s efforts to keep stability and order in the country”. The request was made after protesters mobilized by the Shor Party on Monday blocked the main artery of Chisinau after pitching tents on the roadway.
