The girls and women with disabilities in the Republic of Moldova are sure that in most of the cases they can start a family and give birth to children, while the disability problems should not represent an obstacle to realizing these rights. An analysis by the Reproductive Health Training Center shows that the access to reproductive health services is considered very difficult by the women with disabilities. The Center launched a project to promote inclusive services, information, policies and infrastructure in the field of sexual and reproductive health, IPN reports.
The girls and women with disabilities in the Republic of Moldova represent half of the persons with disabilities and 2.5% of the population, according to data of the National Bureau of Statistics for 2020. The Center said the legal, normative and policy frameworks are not sufficiently adjusted to guarantee and ensure the observance of the sexual and reproductive rights of the persons with disabilities in Moldova.
One of the objectives of the project is to improve communication and other skills of service providers that are needed to offer sexual and reproductive health services based on the respect for the rights of women and girls with disabilities. The existing practices will be enhanced in a move to ensure the women and girls with disabilities obtain information and qualified assistance in the field of sexual and reproductive health.
To achieve the set objectives, there will be organized training courses for trainers in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls with disabilities from northern, central and southern Moldova. There will be created informative videos with the participation of women and girls with disabilities, which will treat key issues in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights. Training will also be organized for primary health service providers and for medical assistance personnel.
The project is financed by the Embassy of Finland in Bucharest within the Fund for Local Cooperation and is to be implemented until March 31, 2023.
