Politician Sergiu Mocanu is complaining that the proceedings started against him after the April 2009 protests haven't been ended despite the fact that the Government recognized before the European Court of Human Rights that abuses had been committed against him, including during his arrest. Mocanu told a news conference today, February 23, that he went to the Prokuratura to check things out and discovered that his case was still being investigated by the same prosecutors, Oleg Malai and Igor Popa, as before the Government's explanatory statement was sent to the Court in Strasbourg. “It is attempted to hush up the April 7 case. The General Prosecutor's Office is still in the hands of the previous power. The Alliance for European Integration is laboring under the delusion that it holds control of this state” declared Mocanu. Ion Dron, the politician's lawyer, says it is not clear why the General Prosecutor's Office hasn't dropped the charges against his client. “The case hasn't got the slightest chance since it was recognized before an international court that Sergiu Mocanu had been arrested and charged abusively”, said Ion Dron, suggesting that General Prosecutor Valeriu Zubco should form a new team of investigators to establish the truth about the April events. The spokesperson for the General Prosecutor, Maria Vieru, confirmed that Sergiu Mocanu's case was still open, but didn't offer any detail. Sergiu Mocanu was arrested on 8 April 2009 on suspicion of being an organizer of the unrest a day earlier, and was freed three months later only to be placed under home arrest, which lasted until the end of July. The politician is still not allowed to leave the country.
