Differing opinions are stated about the probability of a common candidate for the mayoralty of Chisinau municipality being fielded by the parties of the right. Some of the politicians are categorically against, while others do not exclude the possibility that the parties of the right could reach an agreement as to a common candidate in the new local elections in Chisinau. The issue was developed in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.
Chairman of the Party “Democracy at Home” Vasile Costiuc, said he does not agree with the idea of supporting a common candidate in the local elections in Chisinau. If a common candidate is fielded, the citizens of Chisinau could not like this and the candidate of the left would have thus an advantage. “I have full confidence in the discernment and capacity of the residents of Chisinau to choose the best candidate in the first round and to propel this in the runoffs,” he stated. Vasile Costiuc added that particular agreements could be reached for the runoffs and there would be supported the candidate who would poll most of the votes.
The leader of the National Liberal Party Vitalia Pavlichenko said the party she represents can field the own candidate for the mayoralty of Chisinau. “We now try to convince Alexandra Can who has experience as minister of industry and trade and worked in the local public administration. She is a highly esteemed businesswoman,” said the politician, adding they could yet take part in the discussions on a common candidate.
According to political commentator Corneliu Ciurea, the fact that Andrei Nastase is supported by the Party “Action and Solidarity” of Maia Sandu increases his chances in the local elections. Given that there are many aspirants for the post of mayor, a common candidate in the first phase could no longer be identified. “A common candidate of the right could appear during the election campaign, but this could also not appear,” stated the analyst.
