The Pro Democracy Association calls on the Moldovan governors to observe the democratic standards and human rights, ensure a normal political and civil climate and provide conditions for freely investigating all the irregularities identified in the April 5 elections, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Association. “The flagrant and demonstrative violation of the right to opinion and free expression, the use of force and the threats to use violence aimed at inhibiting any critical position shows that the facade democracy in Moldova reached a critical level,” the communiqué says. Witnessing the continuous aggravation of the political situation and serious violations of the human rights and freedoms in Moldova, the Pro Democracy Association calls on the European institutions and the Council of Europe to intervene and contribute to the immediate and unconditional release of all those arrested and stopping of the political persecutions; ensure conditions for unhindered journalistic activity and the right to free expression and assembly; establish the cause of death of Valeriu Boboc, who allegedly died after beaten by the police on April 7, and investigate and sentence all those to blame for the death or maltreatment of the protesters; verify the electoral rolls with no limitative conditions, not only formally recounting the votes; create all the conditions needed so that the public and civil organizations can freely express their positions in the Moldovan public media; open roundtable negotiation meetings involving all the political and civil representative forces aimed at overcoming the tense situation and ensuring the observance of democratic standards in Moldova. The Pro Democracy Association is a Romanian nongovernmental organization founded in 1990. It has 30 clubs that include over 1,000 members and volunteers.
