Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev affirms that the local authorities have to assume responsibility for ensuring citizens with water free of charge during the hot days. The initiative on providing water through mobile outlets was launched a week ago by the Premier himself, yet the central authorities did nothing to accomplish this task. Tarlev pointed out that the duty to provide people with water rests with the local authorities and the subunits of the Home Affairs Ministry. The prime minister also requested, in case the dog days recur, that the authorities demand, in compliance with the international requirements, a shorter work programme for employees. At the beginning of this week, the incumbent head of the Chisinau Department for Emergency Situations, Aureliu Climasevschi, stated that only the mobile squads of the public order maintenance service were provided with water to give aid to the people affected by the hot days. Climasevsci said that he wasn’t aware of the specialised outlets for the free distribution of water. The Chisinau authorities announced that during the heat wave the number of specialised teams of the Emergency Service was increased, and the centres for family and health opened medical rooms to provide first aid for heatstroke. The Municipal Centre for Preventive Medicine intensified surveillance activities in public canteens and control of tap water, and the Department for Public Transport washes, between 11:00 and 17:00 hours, the thoroughfares in the city.
