The Orthodox Christians today celebrate Christmas or the birth of Christ according to the Julian calendar. On this day, the Christians are expected to go to church to pray and thank God.
“This is the beginning of a new year and the beginning of the holidays observed throughout the year. Christmas is the first step towards salvation through God’s birth,” said priest Nicolae Burlacu, of the Chisinau Church “Saint Theodora de la Sihla”.
Christmas is a holiday awaited by grownups and children alike. “It is a holiday that became loved and is never forgotten because it unites us all and makes us be better and more forgiving. This holiday brings home all the dear people together, at a holiday meal, from all the corners of the world,” said the priest.
By tradition, in some of Moldova’s regions they carol on the eve, while in others – on Christmas. According to the priest, the carolers are anytime welcome and the door should always be opened to them.
