A priest from Drochia district was sentenced to five years in jail for causing a road accident that claimed the life of a man, IPN reports.
According to prosecutors, in October 2010, the priest, driving his Moskvich in an advanced state of inebriation, tried to overtake a Nissan and ran into it. The passenger from the Nissan, who was on the backseat, died on the spot, while the driver suffered a concussion and thigh and thorax injuries. The priest didn’t admit his guilt.
This March, the priest was put on probation for a four-year period and was fined 10,000 lei. The prosecutors disputed the sentenced in a higher court and asked for a harsher punishment. The Balti Court of Appeals sentenced the priest to five years in prison and banned him from driving for a five-year period. The convict was arrested in the courtroom.
The decision of the Court of Appeals can be appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice.
