The Buiucani Court extended the detention on remand for 14 judges and three bailiffs by 25 and 30 days. The decision can be appealed to the Appeals Court. The accused are held in the remand prison of the National Anticorruption Center. On October 20, the Court is to pass judgment on the detention of one more judge, IPN reports.
A month ago, prosecutors and anticorruption officers of the National Anticorruption Center arrested 18 persons – 15 judges and three bailiffs – on suspicion of complicity in laundering money from the Russian Federation through the banking system of Moldova. The Superior Council of Magistracy allowed to investigate, search and arrest 16 current and former judges. One of these left the country and was put on the wanted list.
According to the preliminary investigation results, the accused formed part of a criminal scheme employed to launder about US$20 billion from Russia through the Moldovan banking system.
