The Press Council announced a contest for providing the National Journalistic Ethics and Professional Deontology Award for 2016. The contest is open to all the media outlets of Moldova. According to the organizers, the award will be offered after the media outlets are monitored by the public and a group of experts in the course of the year, IPN reports.

The regulations for organizing the contest provide that this will be held in several stages. Thus, in the period between May 25 and June 25, the media outlets can field themselves or can be proposed by media consumers or a group of experts created by the Press Council for the purpose. The list of participants in the contest will be made public by July 10, 2016 on the online platform www.mediaforum.md.

Between July 10 and November 15, the visitors of the platform will be able to give points to the participants. However, the public’s vote is like a recommendation and is not mandatory for the Press Council members who will decide the winner.

At the third stage of the contest during November 15-25, the Press Council will determine the score of the contest participants and will publish the list of three finalists by December 1. Afterward, in a special meeting, the Council will decide whether to provide the award or not. The Council can withdraw the award given the previous years if the laureates constantly violate the deontological norms and the Journalist’s Deontological Code of Moldova.

The National Journalistic Ethics and Professional Deontology Award was instituted in 2015 by the Press Council to promote high quality journalism and good journalistic practices. The award last year was conferred on the editorial office of Radio Free Europe’s office in Chisinau.
