“The presidential office is the only state institution that is not controlled by the Democratic Party. Practically all the other state institutions are controlled by one party,“ President Igor Dodon said in an event held to sum up the results of his one year and a half in office. According to him, the 18 months were marked by institutional struggles and maximal blockages in relation to the presidential office, IPN reports.

In a news conference in the evening of July 3, President Dodon said the parliamentary majority and the PDM, for fear or because they could not take control of the presidential office, did their best to reduce the President’s powers. In this regard, he mentioned the withdrawal of the Security and Intelligence Service and the State Guard and Protection Service from his management and the infringement of his rights to name ministers and to initiate a consultative referendum and his rights as supreme commander of the armed forces.

Igor Dodon said he submitted over 70 legislative initiatives in different areas since he took office, but none of them was supported by the Government or by Parliament. He plans to reintroduce them in September.

The President noted he does not intend to yield to the pressure exerted by the Government or by Parliament event if he could be suspended from office. “If they want to resort to impeachment, they can do it. There is a very clear procedure in this regard, but they do not want to follow it as they are afraid to lose in case of impeachment. I bank on the parliamentary elections. One thing is clear – the President needs the support of Parliament. We have only two solutions further – to secure a parliamentary majority that will cooperate with the Precedent or to change the form of government into presidential republic,” he stated.

Asked if he will run in the parliamentary elections of this yearend, President Dodon said the legislation does not ban him from running under a party list and, if he decides to run, he will surely do it on the Socialists ticket. “We will take the decision when we know the election date and when the election campaign starts. I could head the list of candidates of the Party of Socialists,” he stated.
