Presidential election postponed

The election of the head of state was put off. A new election date will be announced within 13 days. A relevant decision was taken Thursday by the vote of the members of the government coalition, Info-Prim Neo reports. The President was to be elected on October 23. As there was fielded only one candidate for the presidency, the special commission for the election of the head of state suggested that the Parliament should postpone the voting process. During 10 days from today, the commission will accept, examine and submit proposals for amending the law on the procedure for electing the President of Moldova. Within three days of the approval of the changes to the procedure for electing the head of state, the commission will suggest a new election date. MP Ion Plesca, the head of the specialized commission, said the proposed modifications will unblock the situation so that all the shortcomings and ambiguities will be removed from the legislation. Vladimir Turcan, MP on behalf of the Communists Party, said he does not agree with the conclusions of the special commission and recommended that the first round of talks set for October 23 should be considered failed and that the second round be held within 15 days. Eduard Musuc, another Communist MP, asked what the reason for the amendments was, since three polls were successfully conducted based on the current legislation. “It is exactly because of the gaps in the current legislation that the president of Moldova will not be elected on October 23”, replied Plesca. The Communist faction abstained from the vote saying they would appeal the decision in the Constitutional Court.
