President Maia Sandu ahead of May 9 visited veteran Yevgenia Panchishkina, who is the last survivor in Moldova of the siege of Leningrad. She thanked the woman for the lives saved during World War II, IPN reports, quoting the presidential press service.

“On May 9, we will commemorate the victims of World War II and will render homage to the sacrifice and devotion of the veterans who brought the end of the war closer. For them, honoring the work and courage of those like Missis Yevgenia, who is the last survivor in Moldova of the siege of Leningrad, we are obliged to keep peace,” said President Sandu.

Yevgenia Panchishkina turns 100 in September. The veteran was born in Chisinau. She graduated from the Girls Lyceum “Regina Maria” and after finishing the Medical School went to the front, where she treated the injured in a hospital near Leningrad.
