President Maia Sandu has signed a decree to discharge Alexandru Stoianoglo from the post of prosecutor general based on the Superior Council of Prosecutors’ order of May 23, 2022, IPN reports.

“Given that the passing of a sentence by courts of law to ascertain the legality of Alexandr Stoianoglo’s dismissal from post by the SCP is delayed, the signing of the decree comes to implement the European Union’s recommendations to ensure the filling of the post of prosecutor general and the fulfillment of the Republic of Moldova’s obligation to meet the conditionality elements in the judicial system,” said the President’s Office

Alexandr Stoianoglo was arrested in October 2021, was placed under house arrest and then under judicial control. He is accused of abuse of power, passive corruption and falsification of statements. The case on these three counts was remitted to court. He was also featured in a case of unjust enrichment. The suspended prosecutor general pleaded not guilty on all counts.

Last May, the Superior Council of Prosecutors proposed that the President should dismiss Alexandr Stoianoglo as prosecutor general after taking note of the commission’s report according to which the work he did was of unsatisfactory quality.
