The presidential institution prepared a package of laws for reforming the justice sector, including the law on the extraordinary external assessment of judges and prosecutors. The National Integrity Authority will no longer allow functionaries to hide their assets by registering them in the name of relatives. Amendments were also drafted to the legislation concerning the confiscation of ill-gotten gains, President Maia Sandu stated in an online discussion with Moldovans who settled in the U.S. and Canada, IPN reports.

“For these changes to become a reality, they need to be adopted by a Parliament and we really need a Parliament that is not afraid of a clean and independent judiciary. We hope to have such a majority in the next Parliament,” stated Maia Sandu.

The Moldovans living in the U.S. said the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Washington cannot cope with the large number of applications. Therefore, they asked to open consular offices of Moldova in other cities of the U.S., like Chicago, where the community of Moldovans is large.

Maia Sandu told them that she had many discussions with officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova on the issue and they agreed that the Ministry will allocate more resources for consular services. She will also discuss with officials of the Ministry the possibility for employees of the embassy at least once a year to be able to travel to Florida to make documents for Moldovans living in the south of the U.S.

The Moldovans also asked to implement a social security agreement with Canada. Maia Sandu said discussions on the topic have been held for a long period of time, but these didn’t produce results as the Canadian authorities do not show interest. “But we will resume these discussions. We started to pursue a very active foreign policy and managed to restore the relations with a number of states. We have a very good dialogue with the Embassy of Canada in Bucharest. We are for extending the relations with Canada,” stated President Sandu.

As to the introduction of a new flight from Chisinau to New York, Maia Sandu said this is very difficult as the pandemic seriously affected the sector and the number of flights to Chisinau was reduced. “We hope to swiftly overcome this pandemic and to restore the flights that were suspended. It yet depends on who will manage those institutions as we faced serious problems there in time because unsuitable persons were promoted there. We tried to discuss with several airlines so as that they enter our market,” noted the official.
