The construction of the last kilometer of railway on the Cahul-Giurgiulesti segment has ended in the village of Slobozia-Mare, as President Vladimir Voronin joint the rails, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The 50-km section links the International Free Port from Giurgiulesti and the national railway grid.
The works are assessed at 836 million lei, allocated by the Government and the Moldovan Railway Company.
Putting in commission the section will trigger the modernization and the Europeanization of the nearby localities, as 8 passenger stops were built, too. It will create new jobs, officials said at the ceremony.
“Initially planned to be built in 36 months, the section has been built in 14 months. Although the country's economy has coped with many hardships during this period, the work at this important object has not ceased. It's a valuable investment for our country and its future,” he said.
The Cahul-Giurgiulesti section is already functional. The officials and journalists traveled from Cahul to Giurgiulesti by train, yet the official launch is scheduled for the Independence day on August 27.
The building works started in May 2007.
