The Republic of Moldova promotes the principles of sustainable development and actively contributes to the achievement of the objectives laid down in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, President Nicolae Timofti said in the Paris Climate Change Conference on November 30, IPN reports, quoting the presidential press service.
“The Government of Moldova set national objectives with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in such key sectors as transport, agriculture, industry and waste management. By 2020, we aim to diminish energy consumption by 20% and to make sure that 20% of the consumed energy is produced from renewable sources,” stated President Timofti.
The head of state also said that the country’s commitments in this area are stipulated in the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU, which is being implemented and on which increased emphasis will be placed when the current political crisis in Moldova is overcome.
At the beginning of his speech, Nicolae Timofti rendered homage to the victims of the Paris terrorist acts. “Our presence in Paris is a proof of our solidarity with the French people and the victims of the terrorist acts of November 13,” he stated.
While in Paris, Nicolae Timofti had a series of informal discussions with heads of state and government, among whom the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite, President of Albania Bujar Nishani, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili and Estonia’s Prime Minister Taavi Roivas. He also had an official meeting with his Serbian counterpart Tomislav Nikolić, with whom he conferred on the bilateral relations.
