President Igor Dodon will not run in the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019. The announcement was made in a press briefing on January 21. President Dodon said his moral and political support will be oriented to the Party of Socialists that fielded him in the presidential elections of 2016 and that supported all the presidential initiatives, IPN reports.

According to Igor Dodon, the elections are of special importance for bringing the country back to the path to development and for restoring the legitimacy of the legislative power that was lost the last few years. Many things were witnessed in the period and these should not repeat in the 21st century, such as political bias and political crises. Corruption and oligarchs’ interests are now the key problems. There is now a real chance of replacing the current ruling class and restoring social equity.

President Dodon said efforts should be made to conduct a honest campaign and regain the people’s and development partners’ confidence. The elections should be mandatorily held in accordance with the international standards as any attempt to distort the voters’ will can have unfavorable consequences in the long run.

“The people of Moldova empowered me to hold office as President and I’m obliged to fulfil my duties before the people with dignity, without distancing myself and without leaving office. In this regard, I want to declare with complete responsibility that I decided not to run in the parliamentary elections,” stated Igor Dodon.

He added that the Party of Socialists is the only party that can change by itself the power in the country and can govern competently and responsibly in the Republic of Moldova. President Dodon called on the citizens to go and vote without fear and with courage.
