The investigation of the four employees holding responsible posts at the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) for abuse of power is absolutely legal, said President Igor Dodon. “We should yet clarify why the National Bank spent several hundred thousand or even millions of dollars on Kroll 1 and Kroll 2, which was an incorrect path followed during the past five years. They got angry that searches were performed there. But what should we do if they broke the law?”, the official said in the program “President Responds”, being quoted by IPN.
“Two vice governors took part in all the schemes related to the banking fraud. Their tenure expired recently… What should the state, the Prosecutor’s Office do! The state should even pay the services of lawyers in the amount of several million lei for them! This will not do. The law is law for everyone,” he stated.
Four employees holding executive posts at the National Bank of Moldova are investigated for abuse of power. According to the National Anticorruption Center, the functionaries are suspected of attempting to help a group of shareholders of Banca de Finanțe și Comerț SA to take the bank under control, causing considerable damage to other shareholders.
The functionaries are investigated outside custody.
The NBM reacted by expressing its profound concern about the procedural search actions and the method of handling a criminal case that was recently started against employees holding key posts. In a press release, the NBM said the case refers to a decision taken by the central bank in accordance with the commitments undertaken by the Republic of Moldova by the memorandum of understanding with the IMF, in the context of the banking system reform done by the Bank during almost four years. The goal is to ensure shareholder transparency, healthy corporate governance in banks and a regulatory framework that is needed to ensure a stable banking system.
