The President of Romania Klaus Iohannis and Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos, in their speeches given during the event held in Iasi to celebrate the Union Day on January 24, said that Romania is near the Republic of Moldova. The two officials confirmed Romania’s support for Moldova’s European aspirations, IPN reports, quoting the Romanian press.
“We are several kilometers away from the border with the Republic of Moldova and I think the moment is now opportune for turning out thoughts to our brothers from over the Prut. The common history and language contribute to strengthening the identity and solidarity between out states,” said Klaus Iohannis, assuring that Romania supports Moldova’s European aspirations and remains its reliable partner.
Dacian Ciolos noted that the Government of Romania reaffirms its support for the aspirations of the Moldovan people. “Our brothers from over the Prut go through profound social and political challenges. We are near them in this period and confirm the support that our Government offers to the people of the Republic of Moldova, for a society that respects the real European and civic values,” he stated.
The official also said that the Government he heads will develop the idea of union. “Every year, we come to Iasi on January 24 to remember the first important step towards building the modern Romania. The union is the idea based on which this holiday is held. It was a noble idea then and it is a useful and generous idea now. The union made the Romanian Principalities that existed 157 years ago to join together around a country project. We are now working on a country project too, but this has different coordinates and is based on other preconditions. The Government I lead aims to develop the generous idea of union around general principles and broadly shared objectives,” said Dacian Ciolos.
Moldova’s Prime Minister Pavel Filip and his Romanian counterpart Dacian Ciolos are to meet in Bucharest on January 26 to discuss topical items from the agenda of the Moldovan-Romanian relations and the actions that will be taken by the two Governments to stimulate the process of implementing the initiatives and projects agreed by Chisinau and Bucharest. The two will also discuss the reform agenda stipulated in the Association Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union.
