Doctors will be able to prescribe medicines and medical devices covered by the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund by means of a digital platform called eRețeta, under a proposal put up for public consultations by the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM ).

On eRețeta (rețeta is Romanian for prescription), family doctors holding electronic signatures will be able to prescribe all kinds of medicines and devices covered by the scheme, while specialist doctors only for conditions according to their respective specialty. A single electronic form can be used for multiple items.

New rules regarding the prescription filling process are also introduced. Patients may get a digital prescription filled for one item at a time, but for a maximum of three visits to the pharmacy.

The proposal also extends the right to prescribe CNAM-covered drugs to ER doctors, community doctors, palliative care specialists, and outpatient medicine specialists.

The CNAM says the new rules represent a resource-efficient solution that will help to better monitor the drug prescription and dispensing processes.
