Prime Minister Pavel Filip will have an adviser in corruption fighting. This is the EU high level adviser in anticorruption Pawel Wojtunik, ex-head of the Polish Central Anticorruption Bureau. In a meeting, the two officials exchanged opinions on the eradication of corruption in Moldova and the international experience in the field, IPN reports.

According to the Government’s press office, Pawel Wojtunik said the fight against corruption is a common problem for international society, but not all the countries admit this and do not engage in taking anticorruption measures. “Corruption is not a political matter and should be treated alongside other offenses. It is simpler and cheaper to prevent corruption than to fight already committed acts of corruption. I’m ready to offer you my experience and support in the Government’s efforts,” he stated.

The officials also discussed the international experience in reforming systems facing corruption-related problems, the mechanisms for implementing anticorruption strategies and the measures that should be taken immediately. According to Pavel Filip, Moldova now has all the components needed to successfully fight corruption. “We count on your experience and assistance in creating mechanisms that will help us to diminish this phenomenon in the Republic of Moldova and to work out a modern legal framework for preventing and fighting corruption,” he stated.

In 2009-2015, Pawel Wojtunik headed the Central Anticorruption Bureau of Poland and managed to achieve special results in his work, the progress made by Poland in international rankings being a conclusive proof. Earlier, Wojtunik held different executive posts in institutions specialized in the fight against organized crime and terrorism. He studied law in Poland and the U.S.

The EU high level advisers offer assistance to the Moldovan authorities in implementing the priority reform action roadmap and the Moldova-EU Association Agreement. Now Pavel Filip has four advisers in such areas as the public administration reform, financial-banking system, communication and transparency, and anticorruption. An adviser in justice is to be selected soon.
