Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that Moldova’s future lies in the big European family. The Government is also building a European Moldova and will continue the necessary efforts to bring welfare to every home. The statement was made during a meeting with the President of the European Council Charles Michel, which took place on the sidelines of the eighth meeting of the EU-Republic of Moldova Association Council in Brussels, IPN reports.
Premier Recean spoke about the government’s priorities and the country’s European agenda, noting that the support Moldova receives in Brussels confirms the progress made in a number of key areas. “We are stronger together and we must invest, in the long run, in peace, prosperity and security,” stated the official.
For his part, European Council President Charles Michel said that the European Union is open to further support Moldova and the reform agenda so as to improve the quality of life of the citizens.
The officials also discussed hybrid threats, cyberattacks and disinformation actions launched by the Russian Federation in Moldova, Moldova’s aligning with the international restrictive measures, as well as the assistance provided under the European Peace Facility.
Moldova’s European path, defense capability building and the aligning with the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union were also discussed with the Vice-President of the European Commission, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles.
Dorin Recean appreciated the assistance provided by the EU, as well as the role played by the European Union Partnership Mission to the Republic of Moldova, stressing that, in just one year since its launch, it became a reliable partner of the authorities in the fields of crisis and hybrid threat management, cybersecurity and disinformation combating.
“I’m glad to know that we can count on the European Commission’s assistance in building a European Moldova, just as the European Union can count on our country for a stronger and peaceful region for the entire Europe,” said the Prime Minister, being quoted a press release.
Prime Minister Recean also met with Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement. During the meeting, it was reiterated that Moldova’s priorities are aligned with the enlargement of the European Union, namely building a stronger, safer and more prosperous community in the long run.
The Moldovan official mentioned the government priorities for creating the necessary conditions for sustainable economic growth, improving the quality of education and life, ensuring irreversible progress in the justice sector reform, and maintaining peace and stability in the country.
In this respect, Premier Recean welcomed the presentation by the European Commission of the draft accession negotiation framework. “We hope that it will be approved by EU member states in the near future, marking the official opening of the accession negotiations by holding the first intergovernmental conference. We want to respect the merit-based accession principles and are making sustained efforts to carry out essential reforms, strengthen justice and fight corruption,” noted the official.
For his part, Commissioner Varhelyi reaffirmed the EU’s support for Moldova’s European path and appreciated the Government’s efforts to accelerate this process.
