Pregnant women can also be vaccinated against COVID-19

There is no evidence that the vaccine against COVID-19 somehow influences the fertility of immunized persons. On the other hand, the babies born by vaccinated mothers had antibodies against the novel coronavirus. These passed from the mother to the fetus through the placenta, national immunization campaign coordinator Ninel Revenco told a news conference, being quoted by IPN.

In a publicized video, Ninel Revenco says the studies carried out the past year showed the women infected with COVID-19 give birth earlier and the babies can be infected with the novel coronavirus. Special attention is devoted to pregnant women who have different chronic diseases, such as arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus and asthmatic bronchitis, women who have weak immunity or immunodeficiency and socially-deprived women.

There were examined pregnant women who got vaccinated. Over 94,000 pregnant women in the U.S. were vaccinated in different periods of pregnancy and the vaccine didn’t have negative effects on the fetus. It was proven that the women who developed antibodies transmitted them to the babies. Obstetricians and gynecologists thus recommended pregnant women to get vaccinated, primarily after 34-35 weeks of pregnancy, with both of the doses, so that they and the babies are protected.

“Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson&Johnson, AstraZeneca already pointed to the benefit of vaccination in pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. The myth that COVID-19 is transmitted through breast milk is unsubstantiated as the last studies show the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 is spread through the air,” stated Ninel Revenco.

She noted the reactions after immunization against COVID-19 are similar to those when any type of vaccine is administered. Fever lower than 38 degrees Celsius or higher can appear primarily in several hours after the administration of the first dose. Muscle and joint aches, discomfort or a state similar to that in the case of a simple cold are possible. If the fever is higher than 38 degrees Celsius, paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken as the fetus will not suffer. Hydration in the period is very important. After vaccination, it is not recommended stopping breastfeeding.
