Moldova will be able to prevent and to easier manage floods, as the concept of the reform of the national system for managing, preventing and reducing the consequences of floods that was approved by the Government provides, IPN reports.

The concept aligns the national legislation with the EU directives and contains a description of the situation in the field, defining a series of measures for protecting the population and localities from the negative effects of floods.

There will be worked out flood risk maps and plans for managing flood risks in the basins of the Nistru and Prut Rivers and created the national monitoring and hydrological forecasts system. The levees on the Nistru and Prut and smaller rivers will be rehabilitated.

In Moldova, there are about 60 networks of protection levees with a total length of over 1,000 km that protect over 95,000 hectares of land and 93 localities. There will also be repaired the levees of the accumulation lakes on the Nistru and Prut.

Some 40% of Moldova’s territory is exposed to floods. There are 659 localities with a total population of over 100,000 in the areas facing flood risks. The last significant floods occurred in 2010.
