The People’s Party of the Republic of Moldova (PPRM) demands immediately amending the Constitution so as to deprive the lawmakers of immunity. The party also asks instituting a joint electoral system. According to the managing co-chairman of the PPRM Alexandru Oleinic, these changes should be made as soon as possible as, in accordance with the international recommendations, such amendments should be introduced one year before the elections, IPN reports.
“The PPRM considers it inadmissible to submit the proposal of passing to a joint electoral system after the elections of 2014 as this will cause political instability for another five years,” said Alexandru Oleinic. He believes that society must be represented in Parliament by lawmakers known by the people, not by persons whom they see once in four years.
Alexandru Oleinic said that 50% of the MPs must enter Parliament through the national constituency, while 50% through the uninominal constituencies. He called on the ruling political leaders to fulfill their electoral promises and to consider the people’s demands.
According to the PPRM, the rise in the election threshold from 4% to 6% allowed monopolizing the power and hindering other parties’ access to the supreme legislative body. “In the European countries with authentic democratic values, the election threshold is lower than 4% or does not exist,” stated Alexandu Oleinic.
The People’s Party of the Republic of Moldova announced that it continues to collect signatures in favor of electing the President by direct vote. More than 100,000 signatures have been collected so far. As many as 200,000 valid signatures are needed for holding a referendum on the issue.
