The European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) will not take part in the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019 as an electoral contender with own lists or candidates. In the extended meeting of the party’s National Council, it was decided that the party will support candidates who share the same pro-European values in electoral constituencies, IPN reports.

In a press release, the PPEM said the members of the party examined the development of the sociopolitical situation in Moldova, noting the polarization of the preferences of the voters of the left, the right and the center of the political spectrum. They underlined the rise in the number of supporters of the pro-Russian development course of the state and the danger that revanchist and anti-European forces will return to power.

According to the PPEM, in the given situation the excessive fragmentation of the center-right segment could facilitate the Party of Socialists’ victory in elections and this would mean blocking of Moldova’s European course and of the reforms initiated by the previous governments for an indefinite period of time. The decision not to take part in the elections is aimed at preventing such scenarios.

At the same time, in the immediate period the party will consolidate its forces and will prepare for the local elections of next year.
