The group of the European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) on the Chisinau Municipal Council proposed holding a referendum on the dismissal of the mayor general of Chisinau municipality Dorin Chirtoaca. PPEM councilor Oazu Nantoi, in the April 14 meeting of the Council, said the plebiscite should be held on October 30 this year, when the presidential elections will take place, IPN reports.
“It seems that Mister Chirtoaca likes the chaos existing in the city. He ignores the non-transparent tender contests to repair the streets of Chisinau whose winners show disrespect for the streets and the residents of this city. The impression is that the mayor general, for unclear reasons, opposes the reformation of the City Hall’s apparatus, which is inefficient, non-transparent and corrupt,” stated Oazu Nantoi.
The councilor noted that by initiating this referendum, the PPEM wants the replacement of the political class to start in Chisinau. “It should start with the election of a new mayor general, with an appropriate level of responsibility before the city’s residents and competence in relation to the existing problems,” stated the councilor.
The councilors of the Party of Socialists and the “Our Party” said they will support the initiative of their colleagues of the PPEM.
The Liberal councilors, who returned to the meetings of the Council after a pause of two months, made a reply to the proposal of the PPEM councilors. “I remember that during the previous term the Socialists were those who initiated the dismissal of the mayor. Now the role of clowns was assumed by those from the PPEM,” said the leader of the Liberal group Ion Cebanu.
In January, the Socialist councilors announced that they will initiate the procedure for dismissing Mayor General Dorin Chirtoaca, accusing him of a series of illegalities. Then, the Socialists said they will dismiss the mayor by the votes of 34 councilors or by a referendum for which they had to collect 60,000 signatures.
