One year after the launch of the initiative to found the European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM), the party’s chairman Iurie Leanca said they want the PPEM to be a real alternative to the political class of Moldova. According to him, the party this year has often been the target for political attacks by the parties of the right and those of the left. Therefore, the PPEM suggests a nonaggression pact for all the healthy center-right pro-reform forces, IPN reports.

Iurie Leanca told a news conference that the first year of activity was full of challenges. “We took part in the local elections, while the party and its local bodies were being constituted. We managed to extend to most of the districts and learned to work with very modest financial resources,” he stated.

The leader of the PPEM noted that the party also made some mistakes in the period. “Maybe too often we pondered too long over an issue before taking a decision in one situation or another. I think the lack of efficient communication and visibility was also a deficiency that we must overcome,” he stated. As to the party’s future plans, Iurie Leanca said the PPEM aims to ensure much higher living standards in Moldova, starting with the pensions, salaries, jobs and with functional institutions.

In another development, Iurie Leanca said the PPEM considers it is too early to field a candidate for the presidency given that it is not yet known when the presidential elections will take place. As to the term in office of incumbent President Nicolae Timofti, which expires on March 23, he said that this was marked by a controversial period, of instability and political struggles. He noted that he welcomes the restoration of the people’s right to elect the Head of State, saying a decision should be immediately taken as regards the date of the presidential elections.
