A powerful blast rocked the fourth floor of the trading centre Jumbo located on Decebal Boulevard in Chisinau on February 14 in the afternoon. Eleven persons received different bodily injuries and were rushed to the hospital, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the police, the explosion happened at 04.15 pm in the restaurant situated at the fourth floor of the superstore, most probably caused by a gas cylinder.
Eight ambulances, fire-fighter vehicles and police officers came to the scene immediately. The doctors transported six persons, including a 34-year-old man with burns covering 38% of his body, to the Thermal Burns Centre. The other people aged between 18 and 25 suffered burns of the face, hands and legs.
Silvia Babara, doctor-coordinator of the Emergency Service, said that five other persons injured in the blast were admitted to the Emergency Hospital, besides the six that suffered thermal burns. She also said that there may be other persons injured that were transported to the hospital by accidental cars and have not been included in the registers of the Emergency Hospital
The explosion scattered the stands and shelves at all the floors and caused water leaks in the damaged pipes. Many traders sustained damage and all those that were in the supermarket got terrified.
